Yesterday, I introduced you to two of my favorite doulas that I had attended births with. Today, I'd like to introduce you to another super special doula, that I've not had the opportunity to attend a birth with yet. Well, let me take that back ... I have ... I attended and photographed HER birth!!!!
Meet Jennifer West! Jennifer is a labor and birth doula specializing in VBAC and HBAC.
Jennifer's birth, over 5 years ago, was the very first home birth, water birth and HBAC that I had the honor of attending and photographing. It was the first time that I thought to myself that this was such an amazing, beautiful experience and it might be the direction that I wanted to take with my photography. Sadly, family life took me away from photography shortly after that. It was Jennifer who encouraged me to pick my camera back up and head full steam in the direction of my heart and dreams. I will forever be grateful for her gentle encouragement. She and her family are completely precious to me.
Here's a little bit more info from Jennifer's website.
Jennifer West is the mother of 5 and a DONA trained doula, specializing in VBAC support, and currently working towards her DONA certification. She organized and for 3 years co-led her local chapter of ICAN, working with local women to prevent unnecessary cesareans through education, providing support for cesarean recovery, and promoting Vaginal Births After Cesarean (VBAC). Currently, she is an administrator for a VBAC and C-section support group that serves the Bowling Green area. She is also a regional liaison for the Kentucky Home Birth Coalition. Jennifer has been married to her husband, Adam, for 12 years. Adam is a professor at WKU and teaches family studies classes in the department of Family and Consumer Sciences.
Jennifer's vastly different personal birth experiences bring her a wealth of knowledge and empathy during pregnancy and childbirth. Her first birth was a Cesarean birth followed by a medicated hospital VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean). Her third child was born at a freestanding birth center attended by a CNM (Certified Nurse Midwife). Her last two babies were born at home (both water births) and attended by a CPM (Certified Professional Midwife).
